WHAT WAS THE BLACK DEATH ?:
A contagious bactaerial disease, resulting in huge numbers of human deaths. Some called it 'magna mortalitas' (great mortality). WHEN DID IT OCCUR ?: It plague occurred between 1347 and in the early 1350's. in Europe and England. WHERE DID IT START ?: It entered Europe through Italy and rapidly spread across Europe and into England eventually getting Scandinavia and Russia. |
WHO WAS AFFECTED ?:
All of society. It did not discriminate. WHAT WHERE THE SYMPTOMS ?: Swelling (buboes) and dark patches around the groin, neck and arm pits, headaches, weakness and coughing up blood. Generally followed by death! HOW MANY PEOPLE DIED ?: Numbers vary as records were not accurate. In Europe it is estimated between 50 - 200 million people died as a result of the plague. |
WHAT WERE SOME OF THE CURES ?:
There were no known cures at the time. Proposed cures at the time consisted of sniffing herbs, referring to your sign of the zodiac and burning parts of your body. WILL IT RETURN ?: The disease has never really gone away but it is less likely to return because of our knowledge in medicine, hygiene and the lessons that history has taught us. |
