Note: "The Decameron" written by Giovanni Boccaccio is generally a fictional story of seven men and three women who escape the plague by fleeing to a villa outside the city of Florence. The book is written around c1348 and is considered a very good reference and record of the times and the effect the plague had on Boccaccio's city of Florence. The introduction gives a graphic description of the effects of the epidemic on the city of florence. I have used translated elements of Boccaccio's introduction as part of the content in this website to provide some first hand (Primary Source) accounts of the dramatic nature and severe impact the plague had on society in Europe.
